Upcoming Events and Professional Learning Oppportunities
The next D.A.D.D.S. (Dads Among Dads of Deaf Students) will be held Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Whitney Young High School from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please note that this event is for the men only (no students). This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other dads/men of children who are deaf or hard of hearing and learn about deafness, education, resources, and more. Illinois Association of the Deaf (IAD) will be hosting a spring dance for deaf and hard of hearing youth at Naperville Yellow Box on Friday, April 22, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Admission is $5.00 per person. Peoria Public Schools will be hosting The Hilarious Magic of Sam Sandler on Friday, April 8, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Richwoods Auditorium in Peoria, IL. "Sam Sandler is America's only full time Deaf illusionist. His fast paced high energy family fun show is filled with hilarious comedy, award winning magic, inspirational message and tons of audience interaction and participation." ( This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a family night out. Tickets are only $3 per seat, with lap children allowed, and can be purchased at the door. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Pizza will be available from 5:15 p.m. - 6:15 p,.m. for only $1 per slice. Donations are welcome to offset expenses for Mr. Sandler (see letter for further details). 
Don't forget to register for Mom's Night Inn North to be held at Hilton Lisle/Naperville on April 23-24, 2016. This overnight retreat is open to mothers and caregivers of children who are deaf or hard of hearing of all ages and is a wonderful opportunity to connect with others, share experiences, and enjoy some downtime. John A. Logan College in Carterville, IL will be hosting their annual DeaFest on May 6, 2016  from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. with special events for children in the morning. DeaFest is free and open to the public.Scheduled performers are JJ Jones and Keith Wann. Individuals or organizations wishing to have a booth should contact [email protected] as soon as possible.
The Institute for Parents of Preschool Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing will take place June 12-17, 2016 on the campus of the Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville, IL. This free week-long event is offered to Illinois parents of children (through age 5) who have a significant hearing loss. Meals and lodging are provided at no charge to families. Siblings through age 7 can also come to the institute and participate in activities appropriate for their age group at the nursery school on campus. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other parents and obtain valuable information on hearing loss, communication options, language development, and more. ISD Outreach will be hosting two FREE Tiger Kids Day Waterpark events this summer for children with a hearing loss: one at Bensenville Waterpark in Bensenville, IL on July 1, 2016 and the other at Splashdown Waterpark in East Peoria, IL on July 22, 2016. To register, visit ISD Outreach at
Illinois School for the Deaf Outreach is currently accepting registrations for Camp ISD to be held June 22-24, 2016 in Jacksonville, IL. Camp ISD is a free, educational camp for parents and siblings (ages 5 years old and older) of Illinois children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Please note that childcare will not be provided while parents attend Camp ISD. Children who are deaf or hard of hearing entering 3rd through 12th grades in the fall are invited to participate in a summer camp while their parents attend Camp ISD. Summer camps are Creative Arts Camp, Sports Camp, Science/Technology/Art and Math Camp, and Basketball Camp. Registration is now open for Bridges 2016, a statewide conference for Early Intervention professionals who work with families and children who have a hearing loss.
