May 2016 Digital Update

New Titles in the Library!

The ISRC lending library is continually adding new titles! Here are a few recent acquisitionss:
  • James Stanfield's Transitions Curriculum kit, a 3 volume series (Personal Management, Career Management, and Life Management) that includes lesson plans, DVDs with blackline masters, links to educational video resources, and sample activities. 

  • Leslie Korn's Multicultural Counseling Workbook designed to provide new tools and skills for therapists and clinicians who work with an increasingly diverse clientele. The book contains printable worksheets, questionnaires, and links to online resources available at http://www.healthalt.org/.

  •  Everyday ASL Production's American Sign Language Teacher kit (23 DVDs) that includes titles such as American Sign Language for Babies & Toddlers, Emergency Medical Words and Sentences in ASL, American Sign Language Interpreter Training (Receptive and Expressive Skills Practice), and more.

New Resources
Achieving Independence and Mobility Center for Independent Living (AIM-CIL) and Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission (IDHHC) have collaborated on developing a communication card for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing during traffic violations that can be used with law enforcement. The Secretary of State’s Office has since joined the collaboration and the end result is a communication card which is now available at IDHHC's website at http://www.illinois.gov/idhhc/community/Documents/IDHHC%20Publications/LawEnforcementCard.pdf

U-46 will be holding a Deaf/Hard of Hearing Awareness 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Bartlett Nature Center in Bartlett, IL. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. with the race at 9:00 a.m. Pre-registration is required. The cost is $10 for individuals ages 7-17 and $25 for individuals ages 18+. Participants will receive a t-shirt and swag bag. There will be lawn games, activities and 100 yard dash for younger participants. The next D.A.D.D.S. (Dads Among Dads of Deaf Students) will be held Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Whitney Young High School from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please note that this event is for the men only (no students). This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other dads/men of children who are deaf or hard of hearing and learn about deafness, education, resources, and more. The Institute for Parents of Preschool Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing will take place June 12-17, 2016 on the campus of the Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville, IL. This free week-long event is offered to Illinois parents of children (through age 5) who have a significant hearing loss. Meals and lodging are provided at no charge to families. Siblings through age 7 can also come to the institute and participate in activities appropriate for their age group at the nursery school on campus. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other parents and obtain valuable information on hearing loss, communication options, language development, and more. Illinois Hands & Voices / Guide By Your Side (GBYS) will be holding a Family Fun Walk at Southwind Park in Springfield, IL on May 21, 2016 to raise funds so that these organizations can continue to serve Illinois families with children who have a hearing loss. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. Participants can download and print a pledge sheet or create an online fundraising page. The downloadable form, instructions for creating a fundraising account, information about sponsorship and more can be found at the Illinois Hands & Voices webpage at https://ilhandsandvoices.wordpress.com/fun-walk/.
Illinois Hands and Voices and Guide By Your Side are hosting 2 upcoming statewide "calls for all" for families with children who have a hearing loss and professionals who work with deaf or hard of hearing students. The dates are May 23, 2016 at 8:30 p.m. and June 27, 2016 also at 8:30 p.m. Calls are toll free. Deaf Day at Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park in the Wisconsin Dells will be Saturday, July 9, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are only $13.23 per person. Upcoming registration dates for Chicago Park District's Summer Camps for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and KODA Children and Teens are:
  • May 10, 2016 from 2 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Horner Park;
  • May 11, 2016 from 3 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at West Lawn Park;
  • May 12, 2016 from 3 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at Archer Park;
  • May 18, 2016 from 3 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at Davis Square.

Save the date for the ISD Statewide August Conference to be held Monday, August 1, 2016 on the ISD campus in Jacksonville, IL. Registration information with be coming soon! 
ISD Outreach Summer Events
Hurry! The registration deadlines for ISD Outreach's Tiger Kids Day Waterpark events are coming quickly. Illinois School for the Deaf Outreach's Camp ISD will be held June 22-24, 2016 in Jacksonville, IL. Camp ISD is a free, educational camp for parents and siblings (ages 5 years old and older) of Illinois children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Children who are deaf or hard of hearing entering 3rd through 12th grades in the fall are invited to participate in a summer camp while their parents attend Camp ISD. Don't forget to register for Bridges 2016, a statewide conference for early Intervention professionals who work with families and children who have a hearing loss.
